Wooster Day 2013

Wooster-2013-porchJersusalem Wooster-Marker-RidgefieldLodge #49 hosted the first stage in the May 4th Wooster Day celebrations. Most Worshipful Master Simon LaPlace and his suite of grand line officers from the Grand Lodge of Connecticut A.F. & A.M. met at our lodge, then carpooled to the location where Worshipful Brother David Wooster was mortally wounded, off Rte. 116, near Tackora Trail.

The brothers lay a wreath at the marker, where the founding father of Connecticut Freemasonry and revolutionary war patriot, was shot defending the town from British soldiers.

After lunch at our lodge, the group traveled to Union 40 in Danbury for a grand ceremony, with multiple speakers sharing the fascinating history of Wooster and his legacy. After which, we processed to the Wooster Ceremony in double file. It was quite the site to see a large group of Masons in full regalia walking down the sidewalks. Several drivers honked and waved as they motored by.

Solemn words, prayer, a two-musket salute, and taps made the time at Wooster's impressive tomb marker both meaningful and memorable.

The events were very well handled, and our thanks go out to MW Brother Simon and RW Brother Carl Anderson for making the day possible.

In the days ahead, a photo gallery will be assembled to share more highlights from this event.

Ridgefield Rid Litter Day

Jerusalem-sign-cemeterySaturday, April 27th, Jerusalem Lodge participated in Ridgefield's annual Rid Litter Day, an annual event led by the Caudatowa Garden Club and co-sponsored by the Parks & Recreation, Highway and Public Works, Board of Selectmen, Conservation Commission, and the Ridgefield Chamber of Commerce.

Jerusalem Lodge cares for a stretch of North Street alongside the town cemetery. The short time it took to pick up the trash was more rewarding than one may expect. It was a simple act and minor time commitment that contributed to beautifying our town. In the course of doing it, I noticed a few tombstones marked with the familiar square-and-compass emblem. It was time well spent.

Although this is an annual event, it would be ideal if we could tend to this duty in the spring and fall. A special thanks to RW Bro Bill who has tended to this duty in years past.

Celebrate WB David Wooster on May 4th

Bro-David-Wooster-240-320On Saturday, May 4th, we will be celebrating Worshipful Brother David Wooster, a Revolutionary War patriot and founding father of Masonry in Connecticut. (See the excellent article in the April issue of Connecticut Freemasons, pg 23.)

Local brothers are encouraged to meet at lodge at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4th. We will caravan to where WBro Wooster was fell on Rte. 116, by Tackora Trail, at 11:15. Grand Lodge officers will perform a wreath-laying ceremony. After which, brothers are invited to return to Jerusalem #49 for sandwiches.

We will caravan at 1 p.m. to Union 40 in Danbury, where a public ceremony will be performed, followed by a procession to Wooster Cemetery.

New gavel brings the thunder

New-Gavel-by-Ben

Thanks to Bro Ben, a cunning worker in wood if ever there was one, I was treated to a new gavel. Sized more like a small croquet mallet (or Thor's Mjlonir), the gavel commands the Craft with a booming thunder. When the Worshipful Master raises the gavel now, all in attendance know its hammer time!

Author Richard Cassaro speaks at lodge

Richard-Cassaro-Jerusalem-L

Author Richard Cassaro presented a detailed, and enthralling, lecture to the lodge on April 15, 2013, titled, "Masonic architecture & symbols - Decoded." Drawing from his book "Written in Stone," his worldwide travels, and extensive research, Bro Richard shared his provocative findings and insights into the secrets encoded in great buildings and the lost secrets of Masonry.
